The personal superintelligence vision
The contemporary vision of personal superintelligence is compelling, but I think the key challenge isn't just the technology itself - it's ensuring genuine agency remains with individuals rather than being subtly shaped by the platforms delivering these systems.
The historical parallel to agricultural transformation is apt, but there's a crucial difference: farming freed people from subsistence, while superintelligence could potentially shape the very goals and aspirations we pursue. The question isn't just whether we'll have personal AI assistants, but whether those assistants will truly serve our authentic interests or gradually align them with platform incentives.
We'll face the continuous, similar challenge around whose values ultimately get embedded in these systems. Even "personal" superintelligence will reflect the training, objectives, and constraints built by its creators.
That said, the vision of AI as a creative and connective amplifier rather than just a productivity tool feels right. The most transformative applications probably won't be automating existing work, but enabling entirely new forms of human expression and collaboration we can't yet imagine.
